The Brooks Bombers lost a tight game 3-2 on Wednesday night in Saskatoon. Jack Leary was on the mound for game two and the Berries would call upon EJ Miramontes.
Jouseph Gelpi and Payton Matthews both reached base with hits. Kelton Phillips would then hit into a double play but Gelpi would score as the Bombers picked up right where they left off. Leary would record a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half. Miramontes would settle in and get help from his defense including a doubble play with Kelton Phillips striking out and Berries catcher Ethan Menard caught Jacob Gillis off guard at first base with a bullett to complete the double play.
The Bottom of the third Aaron Martinez lead off with a walk. After a fielders choice and a wild pitch he was on third base. Patyon McHarg would hit a single in a two strike count to tie the game. Leary would get himself out of the inning only giving up the one run leaving a pair of Berries on base.
Leary and Miramontes would put on a clinic in the fourth but the Bombers starter would run into trouble in the fifth. With a pair of runners on McGwire Turner sent a weak flare into right field for a base hit. The throw home would take a strange hop and get away to allowed Carter Beck to score the thrid run of the game for the Berries. That would end Jack Learys day, he went four and a third innings giving up three runs on six hits striking out four.
“He didnt have his out pitch tonight but despite that I thought he did a great job at limiting damage in situations”, said head coach Dan Morgan.
In the top half of the sixth the Bombers would answer. Kelton Phillips singled then stole second. He would later advance to third base curtosey of a Jacob Gillis single. Antony Gilbert would hit into a fielders choice where Phillips would score to cut the lead in half.
Miramontes would later make way for Gage Driskell after he struck out nine in six and two thirds innings. Devin Jennings and Jacob Smoot would go the rest of the way for the Bombers keeping the Berries at bay and giving the bats a chance to tie the game.
Unfortunately Brooks just couldnt get the timly hit they needed and ran out of time as Driskell recorded a lengthy save.
“We just needed a timly hit and didnt get one tonight”, said Morgan.
Despit the lack of offense two newcombers in the bullpen prouved their worth in Devin Jennings and Jacob Smoot.
“Those guys are big time additions for our team, we prouved tonight how good we can be on the mound”, said Morgan.
Next on the trip is a pair of games in Regina on Thursday and Friday night, both games are at 7:05.
