The Brooks Bombers started their six game Saskatchewan tour in Saskatoon with a 24-7 victory over the Berries on Tuesday night. Saskatoon would call on 6’5 righty Matthias Trondson. Ollie Duthie would counter for the Bombers. Trondson has yet to give up a run in three appearances so far. That would change quickly, Jouseph Gelpi would single and Payton Matthews would walk setting up Kelton Phillips who would make no mistake on a pitch and drive it to deep left field for a three run homerun. Later in the inning Cash Benavidez would doubble to drive in the fourth run of the inning.
The Berries would score a run in each of the first two innings as Ollie Duthie would do some damage control to get out of trouble. In the top of the second Matthews and Jacob Gillis would reach base and this time it was Antony Gilbert who would send one yard to tack on three more runs for Brooks. Gilbert now has a league leading 9 homeruns on the season and continues to swing a hot bat.
Saskatoon would rally in the bottom of the third chipping away sending seven men to the plate scoring three runs to cut the deficit to 7-5. Duthie would settle in and hang a pair of zeros on the board in both the fourth and fifth innings as the Bomber Bats would once again have his back. Jouesph Gelpi would have a wild insinde the park homerun off a chopper to thrid base that would be overthrown to first. Gelpi would then head for third base off the error where the Berries would overthrow third allowing him to score. Certainly l one of the strangest ways youll see an inside the park homerun.
D’Andre Gaines would add to the lead hammering a pitch to the oppisite field for his second hit and first homerun as a Bomber. Ollie Duthie would continue to cruise until the bottom of the sixth where he would face some trouble and eventually get pulled from the game. His final line was 5 innings pitched, three earned run on five hits and two strikeouts. Newcomer Vince Ray would take over for his first appearance as a Bomber and give up just one run on four hits and two strikeouts in two innings out of the bullpen.
The final third of the ballgame was dominated by Brooks. Five runs in the 7th, five in the 8th and three in the top of the ninth was simply overpowering for the Berries. Cash Benavidez had his best day at the plate as a Bomber with a sneaky four RBI’s. Phillips and Gilbert stayed hot both driving in five runs. Another impressive not for the Bombers was the bottom of the order. The five to nine hitters all each had at least two RBI’s which was a huge reason for the 24 total runs.
The Bombers continue to have great at bats and with new Pitchers in town and a full roster this group is looking to make a run. Next on the scedule is Game two in Saskatoon at 7PM. You can catch all the action on Hometeamlive.
