Bombers hang on to defeat Gulls for the first time this season

On the final Toonie Tuesday of the season the Brooks Bombers hosted the Sylvan Lake Gulls for the fourth and final time this season and defeated them 4-3.

Ramses Guerra would get the Call for Sylvan Lake, Brooks would once again send out Grant Harvill for his third straight Tuesday night start. Harvill would give up just one base hit in the top of the first while striking out three batters swinging. In the bottom half Jouseph Gelpi would lead off the inning with a solo homerun to give the Bombers the lead. Brooks would starnd a pair of runners after two out singles from D’Andre Gaines and Jacob Gillis.

In the top of the second Jace Phelan and Elijah Tanner both reached base with one out to set up a runners on the corners situation. Matthew Murray grounded one to Jouseph Gelpi at shortstop and he turned the inning ending 6-4-3 double play. New Bomber Keenan Parker got his first hit as a Bomber in the bottom half but Guerra would strand him on base.

Harvill sent down the Gulls in order to begin the third inning. The Bombers would use the momentum and capitalize in the bottom half. Antony Gilbert would hit a one out double to get things started. Guerra then dealt one low in the dirt that got by Gavin Galenza behind the plate. Gilbert was late breaking for third but as he was sliding in head first the throw from Galenza sailed high into left field and allowed Gilbert to score making it 2-0 for Brooks.

The fourth inning was a scoreless one for both teams as Hunter Jones came in to Replace Guerra in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth Sylvan Lake finally got one back curtosey of a Marquez Abulhosn solo homerun. The bottom of the fifth saw a walk and a pair of singles load the bases for Zander Bretza. With none out he hit into a double play but Gilbert scored on the play. Jacob Gillis later scored off an error to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

Harvill would strand a pair of Gulls on base to end the sixth. That would be the end for him as he went six innings giving up one earned on five hits while striking out seven batters. Jeremy Kahle would be first out and take over in the top of the seventh. Kahle would give up one hit and get through the seventh spotless.

In the eighth Kahle gave up back to back hits and Devin Jennings was called upon to go the rest of the way. Cooper Cieselski scored to make it 4-2. The Gulls would mount a two out rally after Jennings struck out Phelan. Matty Fung walked and Gavin Roy got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jennings then walked Harmon to bring around another run. He got the next batter Marquez Abulhosn to fly out to left to end the inning.

Jennings was back out for the top of the ninth with the game on the line. He proved who he was selected to represent the Bombers at the All Star game putting up and incredible inning striking out the side to give the Bombers a massive win over the leagues best team to this point.

One performance that went under the radar was D’Andre Gaines having four base hits. Him along with the Brooks defense and another great performance from Harvill allowed the Bombers to take this game.

Brooks has three more home games this week, Thursday night against Edmonton, Saturday night against Medicine Hat and Sunday afternoon against the Edmonton Prospects to round out the week.
