During the Annual General Meeting of the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) this past weekend, there were significant changes made concerning the Brooks Bombers baseball team.
As of Sunday afternoon, the team is no longer owned by majority stakeholder Graham Schetzle and minority stakeholder Doug Jones. There has been an agreement reached with the Brooks Regional Ballpark Association(BRBA) and the aforementioned stakeholders that team would be purchased from them over a six year period.
This past season, Mr. Schetzle informed Jason Thomasen and Jason Wandler he would not continue to back the team financially in 2020, but would honor his commitment to the Bombers through the end of the 2019 season. Once the season ended, there were several discussions between Mr. Schetzle, WCBL Board of Governors, and the BRBA. The WCBL Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale agreement between Hard 4 Sports Entertainment and the BRBA.
The WCBL and BRBA strongly believe this is the right move for the Brooks Bombers moving forward. The team will now be owned by a LOCAL NOT-FOR PROFIT organization. This will open revenue opportunities for the BRBA via fundraising that was not possible before due to the structure set up by the original ownership of Doug Jones in 2016. The BRBA will work to create an Executive Board of Governors that will operate the Brooks Bombers in 2020 and beyond. The BRBA strongly believes that baseball belongs in the community. That being said, the BRBA recognizes the significant amount of work required to make this team viable moving forward. This will be the most significant year in the teams short history, with the goal of proving to the WCBL that Brooks and the County of Newell can sustain a team in the league year after year. The BRBA and the Bombers need community support, and will be seeking out those who can support the team through sponsorships, marketing specialists, billet families, and those interested in helping with game day operations.
Details on an information session will be finalized and released to local media within the next couple of weeks.
The BRBA is excited about the opportunity to take over the ownership of the Brooks Bombers. They recognize this is a large undertaking, but feel it is critical to ensure we can provide the highest quality baseball and family fun atmosphere to Brooks and the County of Newell.
